Susan is counsel in Carmody’s Education group and her practice focuses on issues facing educational institutions and corporate clients.

Susan previously served as the General Counsel and a Senior Administrator at The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, a private independent boarding school, for sixteen years.  During her tenure at Taft, she also served as the school’s Director of Human Resources and was responsible for the school’s risk management.

Susan’s expertise includes representing and counseling schools on all facets of education law, including risk mitigation, student issues, employment matters, crisis management, internal investigations, contract negotiation and drafting, employee benefits, insurance, charitable giving, tax-exempt financing and nonprofit corporate governance.  She gained significant experience addressing the risks facing schools through her role as the Vice President of the Nutmeg Education Consortium and as a member of the United Educators Legal Advisory Committee.

Susan was previously with Carmody from 1992 to 2008, when she represented and counseled for-profit and not-for-profit clients on corporate matters including corporate governance and operations, contracts, employment law, and real estate. Susan has also represented independent schools, underwriters, and issuers in tax-exempt financing transactions.  She has drafted and negotiated contracts for corporate and school clients including enrollment contracts, student and employee handbooks, software license agreements, project financing agreements, and service agreements.

Susan spent three semesters as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, teaching First Year Law students negotiation, counseling and legal writing skills. She also served on the Court Representation Task Force Concerning Legal Representation of Immigrants in Removal Proceedings as well as the Strategic Task Force for In-the-Making.

    • Served as a member of the school’s crisis management team, COVID-19 Task Force Committee, Strategic Planning Campus Review Committee, Safety Committee, and Pension Investment Committee.
    • Managed the school’s risk managing program, including risk management of off-campus school trips and concussion prevention.
    • Developed and presented educational programs for students and faculty on sexual misconduct and sexting.
    • Served as a plan administrator for the school’s health and welfare benefit plans and 403(b) pension plan.
