Why Carmody?

An exciting and inspiring place to work

Our associates are a significant part of who Carmody is today, and they are the seeds of who we will be tomorrow. With this in mind, we strive to recruit bright, highly enthusiastic, motivated and well-rounded associates.

Carmody associates receive comprehensive, multidisciplinary and personalized training that is typical of large law firms, but in a smaller firm environment where everyone knows your name. Our approach and culture help you to develop into a highly competent and confident attorney who is able to serve our clients and the firm with excellent knowledge and skill — and who truly enjoys doing so.

A supportive, high performance culture

Practicing law involves continuous learning. As a Carmody associate, you will be provided with training and development opportunities that are guided by positive and constructive feedback. You will be challenged to push yourself, to remain intellectually curious, and to deepen your expertise.

We encourage you to make the most of these opportunities. Be a proactive, eager learner. Remember to ask for help when you need it, and be open to the feedback and challenges that will come your way.

Carmody’s summer program

Our summer program offers summer associates an overall understanding of what it takes, and what it is like, to be an attorney at Carmody. The program is structured to provide summer associates with opportunities to:

  • work for as many attorneys as possible
  • be exposed to numerous and varied areas of law
  • observe and participate in many aspects of legal work
  • work rotation for experience in our New Haven, Stamford and Waterbury offices

As a Carmody summer associate, you will benefit from four key program elements:

Mentors: The mentor relationship plays a significant role in ensuring your time as a summer associate is as productive and enjoyable as possible. Before your first day at Carmody, you will be assigned a mid-level associate mentor. Mentors are available to assist not only with questions as to particular legal assignments but are also available to discuss and offer guidance on all manner of questions that may arise in your day-to-day experiences.

Experiential Learning: Our attorneys make every effort not only to provide stimulating research and writing assignments but also to allow summer associates to accompany them to events such as depositions, trials, hearings, closings, client meetings and labor negotiations.

Performance Feedback: Summer associates are given formal reviews at regular intervals throughout the summer as well as at the end of the program. In addition, our attorneys are encouraged to discuss directly summer associates’ work products with the associate as the assignments are completed.

Social Events: As a summer associate, you will work hard, but you will also have many occasions for social interaction. Our program includes numerous social outings, including the annual firm picnic (to which families are invited), dinner parties at partner homes, major league baseball games, theater performances and informal after-work get-togethers. We look forward to getting to know you better at these events!
