Immigration Legal Assistant – New Haven office (non-remote)

Carmody is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join the Firm’s immigration practice, to be based in its New Haven office. This position supports the delivery of quality client services by providing administrative support to attorneys and paralegals working on immigration matters.  This role has responsibility for the following tasks:

  • Opening new client matters;
  • Tracking status of existing client matters, including relevant deadlines and visa expiration dates;
  • Scanning documents into the Firm’s electronic document management system and creating/maintaining hard copy files;
  • Tracking notices and correspondence received from USCIS;
  • Copying, scanning and submitting petitions to USCIS;
  • Working with Accounting Department on monthly billing, reconciling any discrepancies and tracking payments from clients;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Immigration team.

Skill Requirements:

  • At least three years’ experience assisting attorneys and/or paralegals in a law firm setting
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage multiple assignments, calendars, and competing deadlines
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel applications
  • Self-starter with the ability to perform job functions with limited supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of business immigration experience at a law firm
  • Experience using immigration software
  • Experience with billing of flat fee matters
  • Experience with NetDocuments or other document management system
