Diversity & Inclusion: Our Mission
Carmody is deeply committed to fostering a diverse workplace that is inclusive of all viewpoints and that both reflects and supports the incredible diversity of the varied and vibrant clients and communities we serve.
At Carmody, we strive to foster an inclusive culture that values different perspectives and experiences, creates engagement, promotes creativity, and fuels innovative thinking. We are committed to attracting, retaining and promoting outstanding, well-rounded lawyers and staff by nurturing an atmosphere where all can flourish based on their talent, knowledge, passion and dedication.
D&I: It's How We Do Business
Carmody’s Diversity & Inclusion initiative informs all aspects of firm culture. Led by the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Team, Carmody offers voluntary training on issues related to diversity and inclusion to the entirety of its workforce on an ongoing basis. Most recently, Carmody offered a seminar on implicit bias taught by Dr. Daniel Barrett, Professor in the Department of Psychology at Western Connecticut State University. Dr. Barrett discussed what implicit bias is and how we can combat its negative effects on our thinking.
Carmody also maintains progressive workplace policies to foster equality. In recognition of our outstanding policies, the Connecticut Bar Association named our firm as the first recipient of its Sue L. Wise Gender Equity in the Profession Award.
Diversity is in our DNA
Carmody has always been on the forefront of diversity in the legal profession. Carmody & Torrance was the first firm in Connecticut to elect a woman as its managing partner. Read the CT Law Tribune Article here. Currently, over one-third of the firm’s lawyers self-identify as female. Carmody was founding member of Lawyers Collaborative for Diversity, a consortium of law firms and corporate and government law departments dedicated to increasing opportunities for minorities in the legal profession. Carmody proudly continues to support that organization’s mission and work.
In keeping with this tradition, Carmody recently became a signatory to the CBA’s comprehensive Diversity & Inclusion Pledge & Plan. This Pledge reaffirmed Carmody’s onoing commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion within our own organization and within the Connecticut legal community as a whole. The Pledge is inclusive of the wide breadth of diversity that exists in our society, and embraces age, color, ethnicity, familial or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical or mental disability, military or veteran status, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic background. Read that pledge in its entirety here. Carmody’s Diversity & Inclusion Team leads the charge in supporting these values firm-wide.
D&I: Strengthening Our Future
Carmody recognizes that creating pathways into the legal profession for individuals with diverse experiences, viewpoints and backgrounds is critical to maintaining our strength as a firm and as a profession. Each year, Carmody partners with Eversource Energy’s Legal Department to provide a law student of a diverse background a unique opportunity to participate in both of their summer associate programs. Both Carmody and Eversource Energy recognize that diverse organizations are stronger and more effective, and are committed to the recruitment and promotion of attorneys with diverse characteristics.
