SUMMARY:To Post or Not To Post? Free Speech\, Social Media\, and the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:On February 7\, Giovanna Weller will co-present “To Post or Not To Post? Free Speech\, Social Media\, and the Workplace” for the Connecticut Bar Association. \nAbout the Program  \nSocial media plays a large role in society as roughly 70% of adults use some kind of social media platform. All too often\, the phrases “free speech” and “social media” are used hand-in-hand without a clear indication as to what impact each has on the other. In Connecticut\, public and private employees enjoy free speech protections pursuant to the state Constitution and Conn. Gen. Stat. Section 31-51q. The 2015 Connecticut Supreme Court decision in Trusz v. UBS Realty confirmed that free speech rights under the Connecticut Constitution are extended to private employees. This CLE will examine the impact of Trusz in the last 6 years and how these Constitutional and statutory protections interact with an individual’s use of social media and their employer’s access to same. \nYou Will Learn \n\nUnderstanding the free speech protections that private and public employees enjoy while using social media\nUnderstanding employers’ ability to make employment decisions based on what employees say on social media\n\nWho Should Attend  \nAll attorneys who use social media in a professional and/or personal capacity. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:The Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Surrounding Technology\, Electronic Communications\, and Cybersecurity
DESCRIPTION:On October 14\, 2021\, Stephen Conover and Sherwin Yoder will present “The Lawyer’s Professional Responsibility Surrounding Technology\, Electronic Communications\, and Cybersecurity” for the Connecticut Bar Association. \nAbout the Program  \nThe past year and a half have highlighted the importance of using technology to keep our law firms and clients working. We also saw a corresponding rise in lawyer gaffes (meow!) and cyberattacks\, as well as increasing regulation surrounding consumer data privacy. Case law\, ethics opinions\, and commentary to the ethics rules make it clear that all lawyers must “get smart” about the use of technology and the protection of digital client information from common mistakes and scams. This interactive panel will discuss some of the pitfalls surrounding law firm computing\, e-mail\, listservs\, texting\, videoconferencing\, and remote working\, and will present common cyber threat scenarios that law firms face and discuss how we should prepare for and respond to those scenarios\, as required by certain rules of professional responsibility. \nYou Will Learn  \n\nCommon pitfalls surrounding law firm computing\, e-mail\, listservs\, texting\, videoconferencing\, and remote working\nAbout common cyber threat scenarios that law firms face\nHow to prepare for and respond to cyber threats as required by the rules of professional responsibility\n\nClick here to register.
