Waterbury (May 7, 2012) — On Saturday, May 5, Women@Carmody volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven (Habitat GNH) for their 2012 Women Build. The group joined over 20 other volunteers to work on three adjacent construction sites located just a few miles outside of downtown New Haven.
Led by the construction supervisor, Women@Carmody went to work hammering, measuring, and sawing wood that would provide the foundations for front porches for each of the three houses. Attorneys Suzanne Warnery and Sarah Healey showed impressive construction skills and proved that their talents stretch far outside the legal field. Suzanne made swift progress assembling the porches while Sarah could be found concentrating over the electric saw. Isa Squicciarini, Jen Calcagni, Anne Peterson, Marianne Dubuque and Erin Dubuque made up the rest of the Women@Carmody crew.
Ellen McNally, Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat GNH, announced during the build, We are thrilled with the volunteer participation at this years Women Build and greatly appreciate your hard work in getting these projects closer to completion.
Once completed, each home will have three bedrooms with both front and back decks. The new homeowners worked alongside the volunteers as they are required to contribute 400 hours to building houses. Habitat GNH is currently working on multiple projects throughout the New Haven community and encourages people with little to no construction experience to get involved.
