Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP is pleased to announce the return of Susan L. Henebry to the firm’s Education Practice Group.

For the past nine years, Ms. Henebry was the School Counsel and Assistant Business Manager at The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, a private independent boarding school.  During her tenure at Taft, Henebry served at the school’s general counsel for all its legal matters and was responsible for the school’s risk management.  Henebry’s expertise includes representing and counseling independent schools on all facets of education law, including risk mitigation, student issues, employment matters, tax-exempt financing, crisis management, internal investigations, and nonprofit governance.  She gained significant experience addressing the risks facing schools through her role as the Vice President of the Nutmeg Education Consortium and as a member of the United Educators Legal Advisory Committee.

Ms. Henebry was previously with the firm from 1992 to 2008. During this period, she represented, advised and counseled for-profit and not-for-profit clients on corporate matters including corporate governance and operations, contracts, employment law and real estate.  Henebry also has represented independent schools, underwriters, and issuers in tax-exempt financing transactions.  She has drafted and negotiated contracts for corporate and school clients including enrollment contracts, student and employee handbooks, software licensing agreements, project financing agreements, and service agreements.  Her practice will resume focus on issues facing educational institutions and corporate clients.

Henebry spent three semesters as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, teaching First Year Law students negotiation, counseling and legal writing skills.

She also served as a member of the Court Representation Task Force Concerning Legal Representation of Immigrants in Removal Proceedings, as well as the Strategic Task Force for In-the-Making.

Henebry earned her B.S. at Syracuse University and obtained her J.D. from Fordham University.  She completed the School Law Institute at Teacher’s College, Columbia University School of Law in 2015.  Her scholastic honors included membership in the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, Dean’s List and graduating cum laude.

Ms. Henebry will officially return to the firm as a Partner in the Waterbury, Connecticut office, effective September 1, 2017.
