Waterbury, CT (September 27, 2011) — The Carmody & Torrance LLP and Northeast Utilities Legal Department Diversity Scholar Program has been awarded by InsideCounsel magazine for being one of 2011’s most innovative programs run by a legal department. The InsideCounsel 10 (IC10) is a profile of 10 legal departments that have developed creative and effective ways to solve problems.


The Diversity Scholar program was created in 2008 as a way for Carmody & Torrance and Northeast Utilities to promote diversity in the legal community and to better serve their clients. Each summer, Northeast Utilities hires a second-year law student with a diverse background to work for five weeks in its legal department and five weeks at Carmody & Torrance. Since the program started, four law school students have participated and two were offered positions at Carmody & Torrance.


Through the combined efforts of Northeast Utilities and Carmody & Torrance, the Diversity Scholar program has flourished, says Managing Partner Ann Rubin. We are proud to be a part of this project as we continue to strengthen our partnership with Northeast Utilities. The Diversity Scholar program was the only one of its kind recognized in this year’s group. Other winners include Pfizer, OfficeMax, and The Hartford.
