SUMMARY:To Post or Not To Post? Free Speech\, Social Media\, and the Workplace
DESCRIPTION:On February 7\, Giovanna Weller will co-present “To Post or Not To Post? Free Speech\, Social Media\, and the Workplace” for the Connecticut Bar Association. \nAbout the Program  \nSocial media plays a large role in society as roughly 70% of adults use some kind of social media platform. All too often\, the phrases “free speech” and “social media” are used hand-in-hand without a clear indication as to what impact each has on the other. In Connecticut\, public and private employees enjoy free speech protections pursuant to the state Constitution and Conn. Gen. Stat. Section 31-51q. The 2015 Connecticut Supreme Court decision in Trusz v. UBS Realty confirmed that free speech rights under the Connecticut Constitution are extended to private employees. This CLE will examine the impact of Trusz in the last 6 years and how these Constitutional and statutory protections interact with an individual’s use of social media and their employer’s access to same. \nYou Will Learn \n\nUnderstanding the free speech protections that private and public employees enjoy while using social media\nUnderstanding employers’ ability to make employment decisions based on what employees say on social media\n\nWho Should Attend  \nAll attorneys who use social media in a professional and/or personal capacity. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:How to Increase Workforce Diversity While Avoiding Legal Pitfalls
DESCRIPTION:Nick Zaino and Amanda Nugent will present “How to Increase Workforce Diversity While Avoiding Legal Pitfalls” for the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. \nAbout the Program: \nEvery employer wants (or should want) to increase diversity within its workforce for a multitude of important business and social reasons. However\, federal law restricts what an employer can ask about an applicant’s race\, gender\, LGBTQ+ status\, disability\, and other key aspects of diversity\, and prohibits making employment decisions based on those characteristics. Experts from Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP will share their knowledge and insight on how to effectively increase workplace diversity while helping attendees understand the legal restrictions they must contend with in so doing. \nTopics will Include:  \n\nWhat the law says about intentionally hiring based on sex\, race\, religion\, or other protected characteristics when the goal of doing so is to increase workforce diversity.\nWhat is a voluntary affirmative action plan and what are the legal considerations you must be aware of when considering implementing one for your business.\nWhy setting diversity “goals” rather than hiring “quotas” may be a smart legal choice for your business.\nWhat simple (and in many cases\, free) changes businesses can make to increase workplace diversity without running afoul of the law.\n\nClick here to register
