SUMMARY:2019 Legislative Updates Seminar
DESCRIPTION:There are a number of major legislative proposals being considered by the Connecticut General Assembly that could have a significant impact on ALL employers in Connecticut. One such proposal – increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2023 – has been passed by the General Assembly and is expected to be signed by the Governor. Other proposals that are pending: \nEnacting Paid FMLA\nLegalizing Recreational Marijuana\nStrengthening Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Laws\nCreating Restrictions on Captive Audience Speeches\nEstablishing Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General’s Office \nIn addition\, the federal Department of Labor has proposed revisions to the federal overtime rules that would increase the salary for employees to be considered exempt. \nIt is crucial for both business-owners and human resources professionals to understand what these developments could mean for their businesses and how to prepare for them. \nWe invite you to join us for a Labor and Employment Seminar on these topics on Thursday\, June 20th at the Hilton Garden Inn Wallingford/Meriden. We will discuss what passed (and perhaps what didn’t)\, and what employers should be doing now to prepare. We will also be joined by State Representative\, Stephanie Cummings\, who will provide us with an insider’s look at how this legislative session unfolded. \nRegistration and breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. and the seminar will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. \nReminder: this session is included in the Human Resources Roundtable Breakfast Series. \nClick here to register!

SUMMARY:September Morning Mingle 2019
DESCRIPTION:On September 18\, Giovanna Weller and Nick Zaino will be presenting at the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s “Morning Mingle” event. They will discuss CT legislative developments\, including paid FMLA and the changes to CT’s harassment laws. \nAbout the Program \nThis legislative session that recently ended on June 5th produced several important new laws affecting Connecticut employers. First and foremost\, Connecticut has a new paid FMLA law that will impact nearly every employer and employee. It is probably the most significant workplace law that Connecticut has passed in decades… and many employers are not aware of its significant scope. The new law will create an insurance program that will pay individuals who are eligible for FMLA leave. The money to fund the program will be collected from an employee payroll tax\, and the insurance program will be administered by a new quasi-public agency of the state of Connecticut. The new law also expands who is a covered employee\, increases the amount of job-protected time off\, and expands the definition of family members. In addition to paid FMLA\, the Connecticut legislature also passed sweeping changes to Connecticut’s sexual harassment training requirements\, expanded the time period for filing discrimination complaints\, expanded the damages available for discrimination complaints\, and significantly increased the state’s minimum wage. \nWe will hold an informal and interactive discussion on how these new laws affect your business and steps you need to take toward compliance. Nick Zaino\, from Carmody Torrance Sandak Hennessey LLP\, will lead the discussion with panel members Tom Curtin\, Corporate Director\, Human Resources at Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals and Michael Timmes\, Senior Human Resource Specialist of Insperity\, LLC. \n  \nFor more information and to register\, please click here.
