SUMMARY:HR Hotline Live: Employee Terminations
DESCRIPTION:Terminating workers can be one of the hardest parts of managing a business and its people. You hope to never have to do it\, but it’s often impossible to avoid. \nCarmody Labor & Employment partners Vincent Farisello and Nick Zaino will be speaking on the nuances of employee terminations with “HR Hotline Live” through the CBIA\, hosted by HR Counsel Diane Mokriski. \nMany employers are reluctant to fire poor performing employees because they fear an inevitable lawsuit. Others make spontaneous\, emotional firing decisions\, believing that Connecticut’s status as an “at-will state” will protect them from litigation. The truth lies somewhere in between. \nIn this webinar\, HR professionals will hear how to make smart\, well-informed decisions about the legal\, strategic\, and employee-relations considerations involved in every termination decision. \nAttendees will learn: \n\nWhat types of terminations are always illegal\nStrategies for protecting a company against a claim of wrongful termination\nBest practices for conducting the termination meeting or sending that final letter\nWhat it really means to be an “at-will” employee\n\nRegister here.

The law currently applies to employers with 25 or more employees and effective January 1\, 2026\, the law will cover employers with 11 or more employees. This seminar will serve as a helpful guide for employers who must become compliant as of January 1\, 2026\, and a refresher for employers who are already covered. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:FMLA Compliance and Managing Medical Leave
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this highly interactive half-day workshop where we will tackle one of today’s most challenging areas for employers – FMLA compliance and managing employee medical leaves. \nWe will discuss numerous real-world scenarios that will provide attendees with an understanding of their obligations under the Connecticut and federal FMLA. \nThe Connecticut FMLA was amended more than two years ago to cover nearly every employer in Connecticut that has at least one employee. Connecticut also implemented a new paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance program. Many employers continue to struggle understanding and complying with these new laws and how they interact with each other\, and other federal and state leave laws\, such as the federal FMLA\, ADA\, CFEPA\, Workers Compensation Act and pregnancy leave laws. \nWe are limiting attendance for this workshop in order to have small break-out groups that will work collaboratively on addressing these issues. If you attended our FMLA workshop last year\, you will benefit from a review of FMLA obligations as well as full details of recent developments. \nRegister here. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Brittany Turner.

SUMMARY:Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Session

Some employers\, seeing the benefit of an informed workforce\, may consider providing the training on a more frequent basis. This virtual webinar will be presented by Stephanie E. Cummings and Sarah S. Healey.

SUMMARY:How to Increase Workforce Diversity While Avoiding Legal Pitfalls
DESCRIPTION:Nick Zaino and Amanda Nugent will present “How to Increase Workforce Diversity While Avoiding Legal Pitfalls” for the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. \nAbout the Program: \nEvery employer wants (or should want) to increase diversity within its workforce for a multitude of important business and social reasons. However\, federal law restricts what an employer can ask about an applicant’s race\, gender\, LGBTQ+ status\, disability\, and other key aspects of diversity\, and prohibits making employment decisions based on those characteristics. Experts from Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP will share their knowledge and insight on how to effectively increase workplace diversity while helping attendees understand the legal restrictions they must contend with in so doing. \nTopics will Include:  \n\nWhat the law says about intentionally hiring based on sex\, race\, religion\, or other protected characteristics when the goal of doing so is to increase workforce diversity.\nWhat is a voluntary affirmative action plan and what are the legal considerations you must be aware of when considering implementing one for your business.\nWhy setting diversity “goals” rather than hiring “quotas” may be a smart legal choice for your business.\nWhat simple (and in many cases\, free) changes businesses can make to increase workplace diversity without running afoul of the law.\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:CT Paid FMLA Complimentary Webinar

It is probably the most significant workplace law that Connecticut has passed in decades\, and mandatory employee payroll deductions to fund the program will start on January 1\, 2021. \nWe are very pleased that Andrea Barton Reeves\, CEO of the Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Authority\, will join us on November 20\, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. for a 90-minute webinar. Andrea will provide an overview of the new law and address important issues affecting employers\, such as how employers will register and remit the employee contributions\, how eligibility determinations will be made\, and how the CT Paid Leave law differs from the CT FMLA. Andrea and attorneys in our Labor and Employment group also will be available to answer your questions. \nWe invite you to attend this important complimentary webinar. \n\n\n\nFriday\, November 20\, 2020\n10:00 – 11:30 a.m.\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER
