Summer Associates

Overview

The goal of the summer program is to provide our summer associates with an accurate understanding of what it takes, and what it is like, to be an attorney at Carmody & Torrance. The program is structured to provide summer associates with the opportunity to work for as many attorneys as possible, to be exposed to numerous and varied areas of law, and to observe and participate in many aspects of legal work. Our attorneys make every effort not only to provide stimulating research and writing assignments, but also to allow summer associates to accompany them to events such as depositions, trials, hearings, closings, client meetings and labor negotiations. Summer associates spend time in both our Waterbury and New Haven offices.

Summer associates are given formal reviews at regular intervals throughout the summer as well as at the end of the program. In addition, our attorneys are encouraged to discuss directly summer associates’ work products with the associate as the assignments are completed.

In order to help make our summer associates’ time as productive and enjoyable as possible, each is assigned a mid-level associate mentor before their first day at Carmody & Torrance. Mentors are available to assist not only with questions as to particular legal assignments, but are also available to discuss and offer guidance on all manner of questions that may arise in the summer associates' day-to-day experiences. The mentor relationship plays a significant role in ensuring our associates a successful summer at Carmody & Torrance.

Although our summer associates work hard, we ensure that they have many opportunities for socializing. We want to know who our summer associates are as people, not just as attorneys; and we want them to get to know us as individuals, too. To that end, our program includes numerous social outings, including the annual firm picnic (to which families are invited, as well), dinner parties at partner homes, major league baseball games, theater performances and informal after-work cafĂ© get-togethers.  For more information about associates see In Their Own Words.
