James Robertson is a senior partner in Carmody & Torrance’s litigation group. During his thirty years of experience as a trial lawyer, Jim has tried many cases, in a wide range of subjects, in both state and federal courts. He is also frequently selected as an arbitrator and mediator.

Notable Experience

  • Obtained multi-million dollar judgment arising out of successful constitutional challenge to Bottle Bill amendments
  • Represented Governor in litigation with major newspapers and public employee unions
  • Obtained annulment, pro bono, for disabled woman
  • Represented major manufacturing companies throughout country in significant product liability cases
  • Successfully challenged, on constitutional grounds, retroactive escheat legislation
  • Persuaded court to invalidate Agency regulations as being beyond scope of enabling statutes
  • Appointed Special Master regarding voluminous sexual abuse cases
  • Represented electric utility company in litigation over wholesale electricity contracts
  • Represented Chief Justice and Chief Court Administrator in litigation with major newspapers
  • Represented large chemical company in several patent, trade secret and employee non-competition cases, in several states 
  • Served as mediator in numerous disputes, including disputes between shareholders of closely-held businesses, commerical contract partners, law firm partners, employers and their employees, beneficiaries of estates, intellectual property contestants, and parties to personal injury actions 
  • Served as sole or neutral arbitrator in dispute between major law firms, in a cost recovery action arising from superfund site, among members of Hedge Fund companies, construction cases, personal injury claims and trust/estate disputes
  • Represented international company in licensing and product disputes
  • Represented several parties in connection with government investigations
  • Served as "Special Assistant State's Attorney," representing the State on significant appeals in criminal cases
  • Represented judges and attorneys in connection with grievances and other claims
